Twenty state athletic associations have sanctioned it as an official varsity sport, flag football makes its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, and college opportunities are expanding every season. The athletes are here — what's been missing is a national tournament circuit built to serve them at the level the boys' 7v7 world has had for twenty years.

In January 2026 the NCAA added women's flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program — the official on-ramp to becoming a full championship sport. Conferences and schools are moving fast, and the athletes competing on Pylon fields right now are the recruiting classes these programs will be built from. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference begins sponsoring women's flag football in 2026‑27 and will hold the first NCAA Division I conference flag football championship after the 2027 season. The MEAC is an HBCU conference — historically Black colleges and universities are leading this sport's D1 arrival.
In March 2026 the Big South became the first Division I conference to announce the addition of women's flag football, with five member schools building programs and its first varsity championship planned for spring 2028.
Nebraska is the first Power Four school to add varsity women's flag football. The Huskers debut in spring 2028 with 15 athletic scholarships in year one, growing to 25 by year three.
The NCAA has recommended a national collegiate flag football championship across Divisions I, II and III beginning as early as spring 2028 — the same year flag football makes its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Games.
